In the area of search and enterprise search, the word „integration“ can refer to two concepts: on the one hand it represents the content integration (meaning the connection of source systems) and on the other hand it stands for the application integration into the digital workplace as well as your e-commerce platform, and website.
Application integration involves integrating search engine technologies into the existing IT-landscapes and ensuring the seamless interoperability between software components.
Content integration represents a connection between content from similar or dissimilar source systems and the search engines‘ indexing of content types. Content integration includes four options: crawlers (for the analysis of web-based content), file traversers (for the connection of file servers), federation of other search engines and connectors.
When searching for documents, it is important to ensure that the search engine does not provide hits for which the user does not have any reading permissions. This aspect becomes particularly important when connecting to and retrieving information from various applications because different security concepts and systems have to be taken into account. There are two approaches for a so-called secure search: The early-binding security trimming und late-binding security trimming.
Integrating content from specific systems like O365, G Suite, Oracle and Documentum, while respecting the security policies of each source system can be a difficult, time-consuming and expensive task for both the customer and system integrator. Although crawlers of enterprise search systems can crawl through repositories and index data, they do not honor the security models of source systems. Furthermore, neither are they able to retrieve unnoticeable metadata nor to detect changes made in the underlying sources systems in real time. Often, the use of crawlers is technically impossible.
Raytion has developed a standard set of enterprise search connectors, which solve two challenges at once. Securely accessing information and detecting changes (such as creation, updates and deletion of content ) in real time from heterogeneous source systems.
Linguistic processing plays an essential role when it comes to retrieving and finding relevant information. Implementing linguistic models does not only improve information retrieval but also the user experience and the search process by automatically taking language-specific features into account and optimizing hit relevance. Moeover, it also helps improving query performance and reducing the index size.
Examples of linguistic processing include localizing search by identifying the language the user is applying, tokenizing and removing stop words. For languages that contain diacritic characters, normalizing characters facilitates the search. Another important aspect is stemming in order to retrieve documents that contain words with the same stem. Further examples involve identifying related words using lemmatization or creating synonym dictionaries. Just like the implementation of spell-checking techniques to avoid typographical errors, the named entity extraction is crucial as well, so that the search engine can differentiate between ordinary words and company names for example.
In order to implement an enterprise search project that manages a large number of documents, petabytes of data and several thousand users, some aspects must be put into consideration. When designing the system architecture, aspects like server sizing, the index size, the index speed and latency, queries per second, load balancing and scaling security information regarding access rights and fault tolerance come into play.
